Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can epoxy resin be used outdoors?

Yes, epoxy resin can be used outdoors, but it needs the right formulation and care. Ordinary epoxies are vulnerable to UV light: over time, they can yellow, degrade, or lose gloss. To make outdoor epoxy work well, use UV-stable or outdoor-grade epoxy, apply a protective topcoat (e.g. UV-resistant polyurethane), ensure good surface preparation, and consider drainage, temperature, and exposure when you apply it.

  • What is the shelf life of epoxy resin?

Unopened epoxy resin usually has a shelf life between 12 and 24 months, depending on the brand and how it's stored (temperature, humidity, light exposure). Once opened, that life reduces, exposure to moisture, heat, or air can speed up degradation. Signs that resin is past its shelf life include thickening, colour changes, an odd smell, or curing problems.

  • What surfaces can I apply epoxy resin to?

Epoxy resin adheres well to many surfaces. Most commonly, it’s used on concrete, but also works on properly prepared wood, metal, stone, tiles, and some composites. The key is that the surface must be clean, dry, structurally sound, free of contaminants (oil, dust, paint flaking), and often mechanically prepared (e.g. roughened or etched) so the epoxy bonds properly.

  • Can epoxy resin be used as a floor coating?

Yes, epoxy is widely used as a floor coating in interior and exterior settings. It provides a durable, seamless layer that resists abrasion, staining, chemicals, and heavy foot traffic. For outdoor floors (patios, driveways, walkways), you should use epoxy formulated or modified for exterior use with UV resistance and possibly non-slip additives to stay safe when wet.

  • Can I use epoxy resin around children or pets?

You can use epoxy resin around children and pets, but only once it has fully cured and in forms that meet safety guidelines. The uncured resin and hardener are hazardous, they can irritate skin, eyes, or lungs and may cause allergic reactions. During installation, ensure proper ventilation, wear gloves and eye protection, and keep children and pets away. After curing, the risk is much lower if the product is non-toxic and free of volatile compounds (as many epoxies are). It still helps to verify that the product is certified safe (i.e. low VOC, etc.) for residential settings.

  • Do your epoxy resins comply with Australian safety standards?

Yes. Epoxy products in Australia are expected to meet relevant safety, environmental, and building standards. For example, non-slip coatings using epoxy must comply with Australian standards for pedestrian surfaces; safety data sheets are required under Safe Work Australia; and there are standards around chemical resistance, fire safety, and emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in coatings. If you work with our epoxy resins, they come with SDS (Safety Data Sheet) and technical data showing whether they meet these standards.
